1. Introduction

Almost a year later we are getting the second generation Moto E, which improves on the basics established by its affordable predecessor. The Motorola Moto E (2nd Gen) continues the legacy of a lag-free Android system provided by a powerful hardware set on a bargain price. This time however, the build quality is noticeably better and the screen size is more adequate. .

2. What I liked about it

-The Moto E (2nd Gen) feels solid and well put together. The rubberized finish is great as is the textured grippy frame. The upgrade to the previous generation is night and day.

-The larger display is still far from stellar, retaining the same 540 x 960px resolution. Colors and contrast are very good but the maximum brightness is underwhelming.

-Battery life is excellent with an endurance rating of 82h.The vanilla Android 5 Lollipop is buttery smooth, while Moto Display is a very nice addition. Motorola also promises timely Android updates for the next two years.

-Performance-wise, the Moto E (2nd Gen) doubles the power of its predecessor, no matter which model you will be opting for. The 4G LTE Moto E (2nd Gen) has a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 chip, which is the best hardware you can get in this price range.

-The speaker on the Moto E (2nd Gen) scored a Good mark, being only a hair below the Very good mark. While it isn't as loud as the previous Moto E, its sound quality is better.

-The audio quality is very good.

-The camera is a plain 5MP unit, but this time there's auto focus. There is plenty of detail, the contrast and colors are ok, but the white balance is often off.720p videos turn out OK, again, considering the 5MP camera. The detail is less than the still pictures and the inaccurate white balance remains.

3. Main disadvantages

-Battery is not user-replaceable3G model comes with a dated chipset

-No dual-band Wi-Fi

-Uses 32-bit Android OS despite 64-bit CPU

4. My experience

It makes no sense to future-proof yourself with the new Moto E 4G now. That is also because there are a handful of other phones that offer similar specs but at lower price points. Consider this one only if you start using the Moto E with a 4G SIM card from day one and really love the Moto branding. Also, even after shifting to 4G, you would want to download games, watch videos and do stuffs that you were not able to do with 3G speeds. But can the Moto E 4G deliver it? I don’t think so.

Apple is believed to be working on a new 4-inch iPhone, and now 9to5Mac claims to have details on what we should expect. The new phone is reported to be an improved version of the iPhone 5S:

oneshows.blogspot.com

1. Apple is essentially said to be taking the guts of the iPhone 6 and stuffing them into the 5S’s smaller body. So this new phone would have the iPhone 6’s 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.2-megapixel front camera, NFC chip for using Apple Pay, A8 processor, and improved connectivity due to improvements like faster Wi-Fi.

2.  The phone’s body is said to be similar to the existing 5S, but with curved glass around its edges, like the 6 and 6S, rather than chamfered sides. It’ll also be available in all of the 6S’s colors, including rose gold. 9to5Mac reports that the phone will “likely” be called the iPhone 5SE, which is a fairly bad name.

3. The “5SE” name is not the weirdest thing about this phone, however. 9to5Mac reports that the 5SE will support Live Photos. That’s really strange because the 5SE apparently won’t have a 3D Touch display.

4.  It’s really easy to imagine how Apple could make Live Photos work without 3D Touch — just use a long press — but it also kinda sorta speaks to the shortcomings of 3D Touch: that it often feels like a long press could accomplish all the same things.

5. Nonetheless, it makes sense that Apple would want to spread Live Photos in an attempt to make them a popular picture format.

6. 9to5Mac says it expects the phone to be announced in late March or early April; that’d fit the timeline of when Apple will likely announce a new version of the Apple Watch, as well.

7.  Apple is expected to discontinue the 5S once the 5SE is announced, so it should end up taking the 5S’s spot in Apple’s lineup, selling for $450.

That means you shouldn’t exactly think of this as Apple’s low-cost phone offering. Instead, it may be the Apple has recognized it’s important to sell more powerful phones so that people buying its cheapest option aren’t immediately stuck with sluggish hardware.
